Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base, with his hands in dharmachakra mudra, dressed in heavy robes, his tightly coiled hair with traces of blue colour, rises over the usnisa, the face accentuated by red and black pigments at the lips, eyes and eyebrows, base not sealed revealing sutra scrolls inside, the interior painted with red consecration colour, Ming dynasty, 15th/early 16th century, height c. 28 cm.
PROVENANCE:
Nils Nessim (1916‑1974), thence by descent.
He travelled frequently to China because of his huge interest in Chinese art and antiques. In 1959 Nils Nessim got a permission from the Chinese authorities to import antiquities to Sweden. He had a special interest in bronzes, especially from the Ming Dynasty.
