The three-headed protector deity seated on the back of a lion with his six arms radiating around him, holding a bow, wearing a domed hat finely incised with scrollwork, his lion modeled with bared fangs, standing on a lotus pedestal, traces of cold gold paste and pigments, late 18th/early 19th century, height c. 26 cm.
PROVENANCE:
Doctor Jakob Billström (1880-1953), thence by descent.
NOTE:
Pehar is regarded as a local pre-Buddhist spirit brought into service under oath by the Indian guru Padmasambhava in the eight century, to act in perpetuity as Protector of Tibetan Buddhism. Pehar is seated atop a lion mount with three faces and six arms in his aspect as the 'King of Activity'.
