The celebrated Chinese artist Ai Xuan - born in 1947 in Zhejiang, China - is known for his evocative landscapes and intimate portrayals of life in the Tibetan plateau. His deep connection to the natural world and ability to convey profound emotion through his brushwork have established him as a leading figure in contemporary Chinese art.
Ai Xuan’s "Child in Tibetan Landscape" is a poignant and masterful painting that beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Tibetan landscape and the profound bond between humanity and nature. The composition centers around a young child who looks into a serene yet rugged Tibetan panorama. The background features expansive sky and land, rendered with Ai Xuan’s signature delicate brushwork. The use of light creates a sense of depth, drawing attention to the child’s figure, imbued with a sense of wonder and exploration. As we explore "Child in Tibetan Landscape," we invite you to experience the harmony and tranquility as well as loneliness and isolation that permeate Ai Xuan's work.
Ai Xuan is the son of one of China’s most beloved poets, Ai Qing, and the brother of the internationally known artist Ai Weiwei. Like many artists of his generation, Ai Xuan grew up during the Cultural Revolution - a period when art students faced limited choices. They could either pursue traditional ink painting or realism. Ai Xuan chose to specialize in realism. After the Cultural Revolution began to decline in 1974, he joined the army and was stationed in Sichuan, where he first encountered the Tibetan landscape. His passion for painting and travel led him to fall in love with Tibet, inspiring his many works depicting the country and its people.
Despite identifying as a realist painter and believing that the more realistic a painting is the better, Ai Xuan's works are not based on specific scenes he has observed or photographed. His work method is to emerge himself in the Tibetan environment before returning to Beijing to develop his ideas. Once his creative process begins, he travels back to Tibet to finalize his vision, selecting the appropriate model and setting before applying paint to canvas.
His unwavering dedication to the Tibetan subject, coupled with the labor-intensive process of creating intricate works, has significantly contributed to the robust market for his art. Ai Xuan's work has received widespread recognition and stands as a powerful representation of Chinese realism, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
