Large folio (590x425 mm. binding). Half-titles. 2 engraved frontispieces, title vignettes, and 202 engraved and/or etched plates, most after Mazois, of which 17 hand-coloured or partly hand-coloured, 10 double-page or folding, engraved head- and tailpieces. (spotting and foxing, slight dust-soiling to edges.) Original publisher's mottled paper covered boards, spines with black morocco gilt lettering-pieces, uncut (partly rubbed and worn, split joints, tear to upper part of spine on the second volume).
Rare monumental work on Pompeii, especially complete. It was carried out according to the surveys of French architect François Mazois (1783-1826). . “It was without a permit that he began to draw the ruins of Pompeii. Having shown his production to the queen [Caroline Bonaparte], he obtained, gradually during the year 1809 – and this is a first in the history of Pompeian excavations – the authorization to draw and publish the previously unpublished remains. of the kingdom, including Pompeii” (Nicolas Monteix, notice by François Mazois on the INHA website). The first frontispiece bears the date 1812.
