Aere expressi ab Antonio Visentini in partes tres distributi. Second edition. I-III. Venice, apud Joannem Baptistam Pasquali, 1751, 1751, 1742. With 38 engraved plates.
Oblong folio. Ca 348x550 mm. Extra engraved hand-coloured allegorical title to part I (dated 1735, neatly laid down, some soiling, closed tear in upper and outer margin), 1 letterpress "Tabularum series" ( some dampstaining in lower margin), double engraved handcoloured portrait of Canaletto and Visentini after and by Visentini, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette to part I, handcoloured engraved plates I-XIV (plate XIV slightlyv shorter than the rest), title printed in red and black with handcoloured engraved vignette to part II,handcoloured engraved plates I-XII (plate VIII slightly shorter than the rest), title printed in red and black with handcoloured engraved vignette to part III (small tear in lower margin), handcoloured engraved plates I-XII. Overall some light insignificant soiling and staining, a few corners neatly repaired. All colouring in a later hand.
A summary: 1 extra allegorical title, i double portrait, 3v titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes (of which 2 hand-coloured), 38 engraved plates (all. hand-coloured by a later hand).
20th century half vellum over marbled-paper covered boards, upper board with central vellum panel with oval miniature at centre with a view of the Ducal palace seen from Canal Grande, under glass. With original marbled endpapers bound in.
Text of engraved title: "Prospectus magni canalis Venetiarum, addito certamine nautico et nundinis Venetis: Omnia sunt expressa ex tabulis XIV. Pictis ab Antonio Canale, in aedibus Josephi Smith Angli, delineante atque incidente, Antonio Visentini, anno MDCCXXXV".
See Berlin Kat. 2695 (gives the date for part III as 1754, does not mention the printed "Tabularum").
This was Canaletto's first great series of his impressive Venetian views. The views was commissioned by Consul Joseph Smith after paintings by Antonio Canaletto in his own collection. The work started in 1728 and was completed in 1735 when an edition with only 14 views was published, all three parts were first issued together in 1742.
