Double-page copper-engraved map. Ca 385 x 535 mm. Centrefold with some slight wear and browning, minor spotting, some slight soiling to margins.
Text on the map: India intra Gangen flvvivm.
Ptolemaic depiction of part of India, including the Ganges delta.
Second Rome edition of Ptolemaeus famous atlas Cosmographia, first published in 1478. The maps for this 2nd edition were made from the same plates. They were produced by the German printers Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Buckinck.
The first atlas to use copperplates maps was the Bologna edition of 1477, this edition is generally regarded as superior for its clear captions.
