Jean-Étienne Liotards originalmålning i pastell finns i Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister i Dresden, Tyskland.
Jean-Etienne Liotard travelled throughout Europe to depict the aristocracy of the 18th century. It is in 1744, in Vienna, that the artist realized what his contemporaries would call as one of his greatest masterpieces, "La belle Chocolatière". In this pastel a young woman in profile holds in her hand a plate on which is a glass of water and a cup of hot chocolate. The sharpness and attention to detail made it the artist’s masterpiece.
In 1745, Francesco Algarotti, famous Italian writer, bought "La Belle Chocolatière" directly from the artist. Between 1747 and 1754 the painting entered the collections of Augustus III of Poland and will never leave Dresden. The masterpiece arouses interest and admiration, so many copies will be made mainly in the 19th century. From the 1880s the image became an icon of art history.
