FIRST DATED EDITION OF SIDONIUS, FROM ULRICH SCINZENELER´S MILAN PRESS. SIDONIUS, CAIUS SOLLIUS APPOLLINARIS. Poema aureum eiusdemque epistole. Milan, Uldericus Scinzenzeler for Hieronymus de Asula & Johannes de Abbatibus, 4 May 1498.

Folio (288x206 mm.). (144) leaves. 57 lines of commentary surrounding text, Roman type, a few Greek. Many fine larger and smaller woodcut initials. Wide margins. Title page mounted, but no loss. Partly with some old marginalia.
18th century dark red Italian full calf binding, partly worn and rubbed, gilt bordure to boards, richly gilt spine with floral decor, five raised bands, two title labels, gilt edges, inner gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers, split inner joints, upper part of spine with damages. Top margins of leaf A2 and A3 repaired, slight stains to last 10 leaves, some minor soiling. Bookplate at front pastedown of Edward Ingram Watkin, signature in pencil of Torkel Olsson dated 1990. Catalogue cuts mounted on inside of first endpaper. Reportedly bought at Thulins.

Second printed edition of this important source of late antiquity, but the first dated edition and the first with a commentary by Joannes Baptista Pius, preceded by the exceedingly scarce 1474 edition. It was reprinted in Basel in 1542 and 1595 a.o.
Sidonius (430-c.483), a native of Lyons, became Bishop of the Auvergne. His letters are of interest for the information they provide about social conditions and the state of learning in Gaul at the time.

Hain Copinger 1287, Goff S 494.
Edward Ingram Watkin (1888-1981), writer and translator.
