Folio (about 350x250 mm.). (I)-IV, 1-153, (1 blank) pp., lithographed throughout.
Sewn as issued, entirely uncut, old wrappers (from printer´s waste), somewhat worn, blank spine. Lower margins of title and preliminary leaves somewhat stained. Some foxing.

A gazetteer of the Chinese empire, compiled from writings of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian missionaries.
Novella (1805-1872) belonged to the Franciscan order and lived outside Europe from 1845 to 1851. His catalogue follows the contemporary division of China into 18 provinces (from Pekin to Canton), subdivided into places of first (FU), second (Chou), and third (Hien) order. Every page consists of 6 columns for place-names in Chinese characters, transcription according to French, Spanish and Italian ortography, and for latitude & longitude, the latter after Viot´s "Dictionnaire" of 1842. The work sems to have been meant particularly as an exact pronounciation guide.
