Contemporary brown calf, worn, gilt edges of covers, gilt spine, damages at head and foot, marbled dges.

The first chapter, headed "Introduction métaphysique du gôut des dames", introduces the reader to the learned Chinese Fo-ka, and the narrator explains that a fairy is responsible for ridiculous fashions, affected language, inspired novels and pretty female philosophers.
Paul Baret (1728-1795) was a French novelist, librettist and dramatist, who satirized the fashions of parlance of the Parisian literay salons.
