Signed. Oil on copper, encased in a silver frame, Assaymaster Nikifor Moshalkin, St. Petersburg, 1792, 24 x 17 cm.
The reverse with an inscription Nikolai Alexandrovich Sablukov, born 1776 1st May, Christened by Empress Catherine II and Count Orlov Chesmensky on the 16th May at Tsarskoe Selo and on the same day appointed him as an Unter ofizer in the Preobrazhensky regiment.

Nikolai Sablukov (1776-1848), whose Godparents were the Empress Catherine and Count Orlov, had a distinguished military career, becoming a colonel at the age of 23, and a General Major two years later. He married Juliana Angerstein, the daughter of John Julius Angerstein whose collection of paintings were to form the basis of the National Gallery in London. She was painted by Thomas Lawrence in her youth. Sablukov lived in England on and off, but returned to Russia to take part in the campaign of 1812. He left interesting memoirs of the time of Paul I and the events surrounding his murder, which were first published in London in 1865.
