SIAM KING MONGKUT LETTER 1857. Hand-written letter, ink on 3 pp. blind-stamped stationery (152 x 99 mm.), dated Royal residence, garnd palace, 2nd July 1857, signed and stamped.
Pasted on old paper, partly over sample envelope and a copy of the king´s standard.
Foxing on envelope sample.
The letter, addressed t S. Gilfillan, concerns an order for stationery to be placed with an English manufacturer.
Mongkut (Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramenthra Maha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua, a. k. a. Rama IV) lived 1804-1868 and became king of Siam in 1851. He studied European culture, science and languages with missionaries and started pioneering programs of scientific, educational and techniological reform.
