Marie Müller was rooted in a family of Austrian portrait painters. She was the sister of the famous portrait painter Leopold Carl Müller (1834-1892), also Austria´s most famous orientalist painter. One of their two sisters, Berta Müller (1848-1937), was also a well known portrait painter. Their third sister, Josefine, married the Austrian portrait painter Eduard Swoboda (1814-1902), the father of the painter Rudolf Swoboda and the portrait painter Josefine Swoboda.
