JOHNSTON´S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE. JOHNSTON, William & Alexander Keith Ltd. Johnston´s Eighteen Inch Terrestrial Globe containing the latest Geographical Discoveries 1861. W. & A. K. Johnston, Geographers & Engravers to the Queen 4th St. Andrew square Edinburgh.

Terrestrial library globe created with 24 engraved gores. Maker´s cartouche in the Pacific, Analemma or Table of Equation of Time chart. Full brass hour disc at the North Pole with a full brass meridian. The horizon ring with a engraved coloured paper ring showing days and months of the year, and the names of the signs of the zodiac.
Old mahagony stand on three legs, but maybe not contemporary, lacking the compass.

45 cm diameter (18 inches), height 100 cm without the horizon ring. Some minor losses and wear, some slight spotting, older damage and repair (about 18 cms long, in and right under Mexico). Some yellowing to globe surface, as well as rubbing.

The firm of W. & A.K. Johnston was to become one of the major publishing houses of the 19th century. Co-founders, brothers William and Alexander Keith (1804-1871) Johnston, started out as apprentices to the Scottish globe maker and publisher James Kirkwood in his Edinburgh workshop.
In amongst the brothers´ many achievements, and one of their major claims, was that of the first physical globe, which won them a number of awards at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
