8:o. 774 handcoloured engraved plates (all, a few folding, very clean plates, overall only minor foxing, a few with some spotting, a few plates shaved of numbers, 1 slightly affecting image, some offsetting, text occasionally with minor foxing or spotting). 1 lower wrapper preserved of vol. VI, original blue printed wrapper preserved to vol VII, fasc. 1-7 [1 in manuscript], vol. VIII, fasc. 1-12, vol. IX, fasc. 1-12, vol. X, fasc. 1-12, vol. XI, fasc. 1-3. Rare complete set with the seldom seen part XI. In May 1840 a fire destroyed most of the nondistributed fascicules of part XI. The planned fascicules 10-12 of part XI were never published.
For a full collation see: Krok: Bibliotheca Botanica Suecana, page. 98-100. Compare also with Nissen, BBI: 2223.

This magnificent work with 774 hand-coloured botanical plates "was esteemed by contemporaries as an enterprise of national importance. Palmstruch´s own illustrations, in the first six volumes, have been characterized as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden, and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books." (Sten G. Lindberg) The text was written by the most distinguished Swedish botanists of the period: Conrad Quensel, Olof Swartz, G.J. Billberg, Göran Wahlenberg. (Sten G. Lindberg, Swedish Books 1280-1967, Nr. 55).

Provenance: Elof Förberg (1851-1923), Swedish dentist, worked as a Royal dentist at the Swedish court, initiator to the Swedish Linnaeus Society. He was an esteemed collector of art and books and his library included 15.000 volumes, among them a unique Linnaean collection and an fine Strindberg collection. The books on Linnaeus are now at the Uppsala University Library. The bookplate is engraved by David Ljungdahl.

Nils G. Ahlin (Ulriksfors, Sweden, owned the largest private book collection in north of Sweden, about 6000 volumes).

Erik Hallqvist, Östersund (born 1887), bookstore (the grandfather of the current owner), had a bookshop since 1907. He bought Ahlin´s collection in 1942 and was interviewed in Östersund-Posten on January 28: "The public may have an idea of the size of the collection, when I mention that I needed 14 fully loaded taxis to get the books home".
