RUSSIA. SAUER, MARTIN. An account of a geographical and astronomical expedition to the northern parts of Russia, for ascertaining the degrees of latitude and longitude of the mouth of the river Kovima, of the whole coast of the Tshutski, to East Cape, and of the islands in the eastern ocean, stretching to the American coast. Performed, by Command of Her Imperial Majesty Catherine the second, Empress of all the Russias, by Commodore Joseph Billings, In the Years 1785, etc. to 1794. London (A. Strahan for T. Contemporary brown calf, worn and renovated, crack in upper hinge, rebacked faded spine, later inner doublures and endpapers. Some foxing and spotting.

Sauer here provides a largely firsthand account of the expedition under Joseph Billings undertaken between 1785 and 1794 to map and describe the farthest eastern reaches of the Russian empire, from Kamchatka in the southwest, eastwards through the Aleutians, then north to the Bering Strait and the coast of Alaska.
