Contemporary brown calf, worn and renovated, crack in upper hinge, rebacked faded spine, later inner doublures and endpapers. Some foxing and spotting.

Sauer here provides a largely firsthand account of the expedition under Joseph Billings undertaken between 1785 and 1794 to map and describe the farthest eastern reaches of the Russian empire, from Kamchatka in the southwest, eastwards through the Aleutians, then north to the Bering Strait and the coast of Alaska.
