LARGE COLLECTION OF LETTERS ADDRESSED TO THÉOGÈNE FRANÇOIS PAGE REGARDING THE FRENCH COLONIAL ADMINISTRATION. PAGE, THÉOGÈNE FRANÇOIS (1807-1867), French naval officer, Commissioner of Tahiti, governor of Tourane in Vietnam and governor of Cochinchina in Saigon. Archive consisting of approximately 200 manuscript letters, dated 1839-1863, and 1 folio volume consisting of transcripts of letters written by Page at sea, dated 1848-1854.

The letters: (200x150 - 310x200 mm) in very good condition, a few with spots, tears and minor paper loss. The transcript volume: "Reine Blanche. Correspondance ave le Ministre". Folio. (280) pages containing 84 transcripts of letters written by Page to the Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies and other officials during the years 1848-1854. The letters written onboard different ships such as the Reine Blanche and the l´Artémise. Contemporary green half calf binding with marbled boards, the binding with a bit worn extremities, the interior with minor spots and stains. The collection also includes a incomplete manuscript in quarto in loose leaves with only page 190-425 present as well as a couple of loose pencil drawings on paper.
The letters ranging from 1 to 24 pages in length and spaning most of Page career, both as as naval officer and as governor, are sent from a wide variety of officials in the french colonial administration. The majority of the letters written in the 1850´s and 1860´s and sent from such places as Egypt, Hong Kong, Saigon and Shanghai, as well as France. Among the letters sent to Page many bears letterheads such as "Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies", "Ministère des affaires etrangéres", "Corps expeditionnaire de Chine", "Escadre des mers de la Chine", "Division Navale des Mers de Chine", "Division Navale de l´Indo-Chine, "Aide de Camp de Service auprés de Mgr le Prince de Joinville". Among the earliest documents in the collection is a letter dated in May 1841, consisting of 6 pages, signed by the Admiral of France Guy-Victor Duperré (1775-1846) and regarding instructions for Page´s travels. The letter is adressed "M. Page, Captaine de Corvette, commandant la Favorite" and sent to Page in the beginning of his three years as Captain of the Favorite, during which he traveled the Indian Ocean and China making significant explorations. Connected to this letter is another, dated 12 of May 1841, consisting of 24 pages, containing instructions for Page.

The collection also includes a letter written and signed by Page adressed to the Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies, not dated.
The folio volume contains Page´s own transcripts of letters written to the Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies and other officials during the years 1848-1854 onboard ships from such locations as Tenerife, Madagascar, Rio de Janeiro, California and Chile.
