Large folio (c. 430 x 325 mm. binding). 1 engraved frontispiece, 1 engraved portrait, 94 engraved plates (lacking one portrait in volume 1, otherwise complete, off-setting from plate to text, some spotting and foxing, mostly to margins, a few more, scattered foxing, about 200 pages of the text more or less foxed, some spotting to a few pages in vol. III.
Contemporary brown morocco, boards with gilt frames with flower decor, inner gilt dentelles, spines in compartments and with gilt decor and gilt titles, gilt edges (slightly worn and rubbed, partly more to the extremities, one inner hinge split, a few top edges with minor damages or wear).

Fine set of John and Josiah Boydell's monumental edition of Shakespeare, illustrated with specially commissioned engravings after paintings by the greatest English artists such as Bunbury, Fuseli, Reynolds, Hamilton, Opie, Stothard, Westall, Northcote and others. For the Boydell edition they founded a special type foundry and printer´s workshop.
