SCHEFFERUS, JOHANNES. The History of Lapland wherein are shewed the Original, Manners, Habits, Marriages, Conjuration, &c. of that People. Oxford (at the Theatre ) 1674.

Large 4:o. (4), 1-147, (1) pp. Engraved extra title leaf (close cut in outer margin, some small tears in lower margin, larger spot in inner part), title leaf with woodcut vignette (larger spot in inner margin), folding engraved map (laid down on later paper, mended tears around the folding, worn in outer margin, some spotting), 25 woodcuts in the text (all).
Contemporary brown half leather, worn, blank damaged spine, lacks endpapers. Some tears or mended teras in lower margin. Some marginal dampstaining, some foxing and spotting, larger brownspot in part of inner margin. Old signature on back of frontispiece "Henry Bolchor 1707".

Early and important work on the laplanders, their history and culture. First Latin edition published in 1673, a German in 1675, an enlarged French in 1678 and a Dutch in 1682.
This was the first authoritative account of the Lapps since Olaus Magnus. The description is based on reports prepared by clergymen in the North of Sweden. The author Schefferus (or Scheffer) was a professor at Uppsala University, where he had been invited in 1647 from Strassbourg. (Sten G. Lindberg, Swedish Books 1280-1967, page 23).
