Folio (about 300x185 mm.). (4), 1-541, (3, 2 blank), (36, last blank) pp. Title with woodcut printer´s device. 1 folding engraved world map (Shirley 166), nice woodcut initials.
Contemporary vellum, worn, missing straps, partly defective spotted spine with manuscript title. Minor browning, some staining. Old signature in upper margin of title.

Third edition, the first to be printed in Germany (Cologne) and with a world map. Only the Cologne editions of 1589 and 1593 has the engraved world map.
According to Shirley: "A skilled engraver has copied Ortelius´ 1570 world map with a new title placed over the Northern parts with strapwork in the corners".
Classical work on early mission in America, India, and Japan, assembled in Lisbon from original sources.
