First edition. The book was translated into French in 1801 and German in 1802.
Edelcrantz, prior to his ennoblement in 1789 Clewberg, was called "the father of Swedish telegraphy" and worked on a system which was more advanced then that of Chappe. He also introduced the system of mechanically operated semaphores to Sweden, and designed the first Swedish telegraph line between Stockholm and Drottningholm in 1794.
