New light brown half calf, gilt spine in six compartments, speckled edges. P. 195-196 in vol. II with small holes and loss of a few letters. 2 leaves in vol. II mended in lower outer corner. A few marginal inkspots, some minor foxing. 3 leaves with some marginal dampstaining. Old signatures on title and halftitle to vol. I. 4 volumes.

Pritzel 9259. First edition of this important scientific voyage and a detailed account of Japan. Thunberg (1743-1828) travelled to Japan, Ceylon and South Africa and was called the "Japanese Linnaeus" as well as "The father of Cape Botany". The work was also published in German, English and French.
