Description
PERSIAN MANUSCRIPT, 19TH CENTURY. Shahnama manuscript with miniatures, Qajar, 19th century, in Persian. (Not complete).
4to (c. 240x170 mm). 332 leaves. 24 miniatures in text of with 13 are damaged and 5 "chapter leaves" with decorated with flowers on blue and gilt ground with red and gilt frame (2 with repairs, 2 with tears, 5 with holes, 5 worn with colour loss, title leaves with some wear to upper part). Illustrations are about 100x110 mm.
Text in four coloumns with blue and red-ruled gold frame with 4 title leaves (mentioned above).
First leaf defective, first 5 leaves with new margins and staining, throughout with a dark dampstain to upper part of margin and affecting four lines of the text, partly with spotting and foxing, mostly to margins, lacking two corners, some tears and repairs.
Leather binding, covers with blindtooled decor, worn and with rubbed edges, split joints, lower cover almost loose, some damages to spine. Some notes on verso of last leaf with the date 1325 in arabic (=1907).
Incomplete, last leaf defective, probably lacking a chapter in the beginning.
The Shahnameh (or Shahnama) Book of Kings, is an epic composed by the Iranian poet Hakim Abul-Qasim Mansur (later known as Ferdowsi Tusi), and completed around 1010 CE. It s the world´s longest epic poem created by a single poet, and the national epic of Greater Iran. (Wikipedia).
