Of the 108 maps, 12 are of the ancient world and 96 reflect modern geography. Many maps in this atlas are made after the latest exploration of the areas, such as the maps of the East Indies, China, Japan, Africa and Egypt, and the maps of North America, Canada, Virginia and Maryland, Colonies Angloises which therefore are expecially interesting.
The 103 listed maps are augmented by five maps of post roads which were made available to the subscribers for the additional cost of 6 ´livres´. This popular atlas was issued by subscription and 1,118 copies were applied for in all.

An important large-paper copy of this atlas comprising letterpress ´avertissement´ leaf, 40 pp. text, 1p. ´table des articles´, 5pp. subscribers, 1p. with details of costs and additional maps. The engraved title is signed Ch. Baquoy and J. Oger.
The Atlas Universel was Robert de Vaugondy´s principal atlas first published in 1753, soon after he had set up in business in Paris. Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy, a father and son team, produced their atlases, globes and maps together. In 1760 Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed Royal Geographer to the French court.
Their atlas is a continuation of Sanson's great work, "Cartes Générales de Toutes les Parties de Monde" published in 1654 and later enhanced and enlarged by Hubert Jaillot.

Provenance: Mr. Dieudonné Jeanroy (1750-1816), Professor in Médicine at the ´Faculté de Médecine´ in Paris.
A Swedish private collection.
