Oblong folio (300x380 mm.). 14 pp. 20 chromolithographed plates, 2 leaves with 25 mounted paint swatches. Numerous advertisements at rear (plates with some slight soiling to margins, minor spot to one plate, title with some spotting together with some pencil notes, a few stains to the text).
Publisher´s black cloth with gilt title on cover, rubbed and worn with stains, crack in lower inner joint, damages to spine, partly loose in binding.

One of the lavish books of painting designs for buildings produced in the 1880s in the manner of John Lucas and Company.
First edition. A famous book, this is considered to be one of the best of the several 19th century house paint pattern book / trade catalogues, and also the rarest, it was reprinted in facsimile by the Athenaeum of Philadelphia by Samuel J. Dornsife in 1976.
