Description

PEKING. ANRIQUES. "Vue de Peking capitale de la Chine, et de la superbe muraille qui la separe de la Tartarie". Engraved handcoloured "vue d´optique" by Anriques (plate size about 300x420 mm.), Paris, chez Jacques Chereau, no date (about 1750-60). In passepartout.

Löwendahl: China illustrata nova. Supplement, E 27.
Vues d´optique were engravings to be viewed through a convex lens, such that the viewer saw a reversed and seemingly three-dimensional scene.
Jacques Chéreau (1688-1776) was a printmaker and publisher of optical prints at the rue St. Jacques in Paris. After his death the business was continued by his grandson, Jacques-François Chéreau (1742-1794).

From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
