Contemporary brown mottled calf, worn, upper cover detached, gilt spine, spine labels missing, red edges. Title and first 3 leaves dampstained in outer margin. Signature of W. Lee on title.
Löwendahl: China illustrata nova. Supplement, 1649.
Three editions dated 1764 exist, all published anonymously. The present edition is usually accepted as the first edition.
Contains i.a. the following articles: "De la Chine" (pp. 78-91) and "Catechisme chinois" (pp. 91-116).
The work was almost immedialety condemned and burned in France, Geneva, the Netherlands, and Rome for its blasphemy, while simultaneously securing its enduring popularity.
