Early Swedish fantasy / utopian fiction. In Nyrén's story, he travels to the Schlarraffenland with the new technology of that time (the Montgolfier Brothers made their first flights in 1783), the hot air balloon, in which he leaves Sweden from Södertörn, south of Stockholm, travels across the Baltics, Russia, Central Asia and eventually reaches the Pacific, where he enters the parallel fantasy world.
This Swedish translation and updating is based on von Schnebelin's famous work "Schlarraffenland" (Nürnberg 1694). The map was made by Johann Laurentz Caton dated 1788, size 485x560 mm, based on maps by Schenk and Homann.

Compare Lundwall: Illustrerad bibliografi över science fiction & fantasy 1741-1973 (Stockholm 1974), sid 226-227, Göran Bäärnhielm, article in Biblis 42.

Provenance: Skottorp Castle (Skottorps slott), situated in the province of Halland, southern Sweden. In 1813 the castle was bought by Peter von Möller, who together with his son Adolf Peter Möller, were the founders of the library.

IMAGINARY MAP. (HOMANN, JOHANN BAPTIST).

Hand-coloured (original colour) engraved allegorical map with large figurative cartouche in colours, c. 490x560 mm. Laid down on japan paper, some slight cracks, small repair in the middle, lower corners repaired, some soiling to margins.

Homann's rare imaginary map of the "Schlarraffenlandes", a German Fool's Paradise, and a country of idleness and luxury. It is based on the 16th century satire of Hans Sachs, where chickens, geese, and pigeons fly around already cooked and every house is surrounded by a hedge of sausage. Schlarraffenlandes is divided into 19 regions with such names as Prodigalia Regnum (Kingdom of Extravagance), Magni Stomachi Imperium (Empire of Fat Stomachs), Pigritaria (Land of Indolence) and Lurconia (Land of Gluttony) all surrounding a central Venerea Meer (Sea of Lust). There are many amusing names for places, rivers and geographical features, for example the Loafing Department, Braggadocio Center, Fool's Home, Blasphemy City, Tobacco Island, Sea of Trollops, and the Sea of Drunkenness.

The four kingdoms surrounding Utopia are Youth in the east and Old Age to the west. In the south is Tartari Regnu - the nether regions at the end of the earth or Hell where all inhabitants of Schlarraffenlandes are destined to go. In the north is the Terra Sancta Incognita (Unknown Land of Religion) where Jerusalem is shown shining from a mountaintop. The large title cartouche at bottom is surrounded by figures demonstrating all aspects of human debauchery and foolishness.
