Large 8vo (230x137 mm). Engraved frontispiece, (28), (probably lacking last leaf "List of Antiquities according to Cohen), 264 pp., engraved frontispiece, (22), 191, (13) pp. With 2 engraved frontispieces (one foxed on verso), engraved text, 8 engraved plates, many engraved vignettes and initials.
Contemporary English red morocco bindings, richly gilt covers, inner gilt dentelles and edges of covers, richly gilt spines in six compartments, gilt edges, slightly worn and rubbed, spines faded, inner hinges partly split. In slipcase. Some foxing or browning. A few notes on the flyleaves. Bookplates of William Dickinson Esq. 2 volumes.

Cohen-R. 497-98, Graesse III, 354. First printing first issue of this edition ("Post - Est" on the medaillon on page 108 in vol II).
According to Cohen vol. II lacks 1 leaf in the beginning, but not according to library catalogues.

John Pine (1690-1756) is regarded the best English engraver of the first half of the 18th century, he may have been the pubil of Bernard Picart, the great French engraver. This edition of Horace is engraved throughout, text as well as ornament (Printing and the Mind of Man, 105).
