MARTIN, GEORGE M. Operations in the Canton River in April 1847, under the joint command of Majo General D´Aguilar... and captain McDougall of the Royal Navy. From drawings made on the spot by LieuT Martin, 42ND Madras native Infantry, acting engineer. London (Henry Graves & Co.) 1848.

Large folio (c. 555x375 mm.). Tinted lithograph pictorial title-leaf (Bay of Victoria, Hong Kong, some foxing), signed J. Picken, lith. + Dedication leaf (some foxing) + 1 text leaf (descriptive text and list of plates) + 1 plate "Sketch of the river Chou Kiang". + 9 tinted lithographed plates with views (all, some very minor marginal foxing) lithographed by Day & Son lith.rs to the Queen.
Loose in contemporary leather-backed cloth, worn, corners defective, titled in gold on upper board, worn spine damaged at foot.

The sheet of letterpress gives a short résumé of events leading to the expedition and, extracts, from the despatch of General d´Aguilar to Earl Grey and published in the supplement of the London Gazette, June 25, 1847.
The plates are: "Forts and batteries of the Bocca-Tigris", "M. General D´Aguilar with the 18th R. Irish taking possession of the Annanghoy batteries", "The staked barrier or second pass of the canton River, above Whampoa", "Forts and batteries of the staked barrier of the Canton River", "French Folly Fort, city of Canton", "British and foreign factories at canton", "The keep of French Folly Fort blown up by the Royal sappers and miners", The British factory at Canton", and "The return to Hong Kong, the Vulture pasing the battery upon Tygis island".
