Beskrivning

RIPA, MATTEO (1682-1746). 8 of 36 copperplate prints (in etching and engraving), surface c. 270x300 mm., on thin paper, no watermarks, [Rehe (Chengde = Jehol) 1714]. [The title of the work is: (Xiang yuan yi qing) / Thirty-six views of the Imperial Summer Palace at Jehol].

Sewn in new yellow wrappers. Traces of one central vertical fold. Bookplate "Exlibris Charles E. Tuttle Vermont".

They are, according to Ripa´s captions in Italian in the BM copy (generously given by Dr. Hartmut Walravens):

Ripa, an Italian who arrived in Beijing in 1711 and who became the first non-Jesuit missionary to serve at the Chinese court, transferred the 36 woodcuts by Zhu Gui and Mei Yufung after Shen Yu illustrating the two parallel editions in Chinese and Manchu of the Kangxi emperor´s poems on his favourite 36 scenes in his garden of Rehe (Chengde = Jehol) "Yuzhi Bishu shanzhuang shitu" and "Han-i araha alin-i tokso de halton de jailaha gi bithe" to copperplate prints in 1713 and 1714, with some alterations. Ripa´s prints represents the first Western copperplate printing in China. They were issued without text and without title.
