Contemporary brown calf, worn, upper cover detached, gilt borders, rebacked, gilt spine, damages at head and foot, cracks in the hinges. A few leaves in the beginning loose. Ownership inscriptions on title and leaf A3 recto.

On pp. 12-22 in the first chapter "On the antiquity of silk", Barham advances the theory that the Chinese were the first to manufacture silk.
