Philipp Johan Tabbert, enobled von Strahlenberg (1676-1747), German officer who participated in Sweden´s war against Russia and was captured after the battle of Poltava 1709. He spent the years 1711-1722 in captivity in Siberia, where he collected material for his book.
The most important aspect of the present work, however, is Strahlenberg´s rare and significant map representing the Russian realm and Great Tartary, containing extensive information regarding Siberia. Preparing the map, Strahlenberg used his own latitude calculations, as well as expedition accounts written by others. The offered copy is of the second English edition (after the first edition in German in 1730 and the first English of 1736), with the map specially re-engraved by Richard William Seale.
The first edition of the book, in German, was published in Stockholm 1730.

Probably Sir Everard Buckworth, 3rd Baronet (1704-1779), of Sheen in the County of Surrey, assistant Gentleman Usher to George II.

Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Ludvig (Gösta) Nobel (1886-1955), youngest son of Ludvig and Edla Nobel, was in Baku between 1914-17 and later took over as Managing Director over Branobel or "The Nobel Brothers Company". The oil company was founded in Baku by his father and the two brothers Alfred and Robert. He and his family had to flee Russia 1918 during the Russian revolution.
