Containing, an exact and particular description of the Extent and Limits of those Countries, and the Customs of the Barbarous Inhabitants, with reference to their Religion, Governement, Marriages, daily Imployments, Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals, &c... To which is annex´d an accurate Description of China, Done Originally by a Chinese Author: With several Remarks, by way of Commentary, alluding to what our European Authors have writ of that Country... 4:o (about 242x190 mm.). (12), 1-110, (2 blank), (2), 115-191, 190-210 pp. Engraved frontispiece, 1 large engraved folding map, 30 engraved views and plates, of which 8 folding (all, minor foxing).
Contemporary brown full calf, partly worn, covers with blindtooled frames, cracked and partly loose in upper joint, spine with gilt and blindtooled decorations in six compartments, damages at head and foot, red edges. Minor foxing.

Löwendahl, China Illustrata Nova 294. First English edition, translated from the Dutch edition of 1704. Pp. 113 ff. contain the description of China by Dionysius Kao, a chinese doctor, who practised in Siam and India, and was a Roman Catholic convert.

Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Ludvig (Gösta) Nobel (1886-1955), youngest son of Ludvig and Edla Nobel, was in Baku between 1914-17 and later took over as Managing Director over Branobel or "The Nobel Brothers Company". The oil company was founded in Baku by his father and the two brothers Alfred and Robert. He and his family had to flee Russia 1918 during the Russian revolution.
