8:o, atlas large 4:o (about 333x253 mm.). (4), (i)-lx, (1)-444, (4), (1)-480 pp. 4 folding maps (one coloured in outline, some foxing), 1 folding printed table, atlas with 60 partly folding lithograph maps, plans and plates of which 34 coloured (all, 1 folding plate more foxed and with tear in the folding, otherwise some minor foxing, some creases to upper part).
Contemporary brown half calf, partly worn, some cracks in the joints, slightly faded gilt spines, spine to atlas with some damage at head and partly spotted in lower part, marbled edges. Endpapers foxed. Text some foxing and marginal staining. Bookplate of Gösta Nobel. Stamp with baronial crown and monogram G S on first free endpapers. 3 volumes.

An account of Gamba, French consul at Tiflis, describing his journey along the Black Sea littoral and into the Caucasus. He had been charged by the duc de Richelieu to develope Black Sea and trans-Caucasian trade routes.

Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Ludvig (Gösta) Nobel (1886-1955), youngest son of Ludvig and Edla Nobel, was in Baku between 1914-17 and later took over as Managing Director over Branobel or "The Nobel Brothers Company". The oil company was founded in Baku by his father and the two brothers Alfred and Robert. He and his family had to flee Russia 1918 during the Russian revolution.
