COPLEY, JOHN. The Fall and Rise of His Imperial Majesty Jacques Démodé Emperor of the Sahara. No place or year (1909).

Folio (about 450x305 mm.). Lithographed throughout, with 22 plates tipped in, some with touches of colour, all signed in pencil.
Original grey cloth, somewhat worn, titled in gold on upper board, blank spine, uncut. Dedication to Lewis Hind on title. 25 numbered copies, this is number 8.
Loosely inserted a letter from Harold Wright dated 6th Dec. 1931 concerning the artist and the book, with a copy of a letter from John Copley (dated 13th June 1930), also regarding the book.

Charles Lewis Hind (1862-1927), British journalist, writer, editor, art critic, and art historian.
John Copley (1875-1950), British artist. He was a founder member of the Senefelder Club and served as its honorary secretary from 1910 to 1916. He won a silver medal in the art competitions at the 1948 Summer Olympics aged 73.
Copley was influenced by Ford Madox Brown. He became interested in lithography in 1906 and initially worked in colour before exclusively working in black and white. One of his works claimed a prize at Chicago Art Institute´s First International Exhibition of Lithographs (1930). In 1947 Copley was honoured as the president of the Royal Society of British Artists.
