Original green gilt-stamped cloth, partly worn, faded spines, damages at head and foot, crack in upper hinge to vol. II, partly loose in the bindings. 2 leaves discoloured from newspaper cutting, some foxing and staining, some offsetting from plates. Gift inscription on first endpaper in vol. I. Signatures on first endpapers. Bookplates of Bengt Olof Kritz and R. S. Boumphrey. First edition. 2 volumes.

The first scientific expedition sent out specifically for Antarctic exploration and research. The Ross Sea was named after its commander.
