Description

LARGE PANORAMIC VIEW OF STOCKHOLM. PUFENDORF, SAMUEL VON. Engraved plate with the folding panoramic view of Stockholm depicting the funeral ceremonies of Charles X Gustav. Nürnberg 1697.

The large funeral plate, here joined together and folded. About 285x4500 mm. Some minor mended tears in margin. In a later (20th century) paper binding with blank spine of cloth, ties. Some soiling to boards.

The funeral was held on November 3 in 1660. After Erik Dahlberg, engraver unknown, probably French or German.
Probably from the Latin edition of Samuel Pufendorf´s "De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo" published in 1696. A German edition was published in 1697.
The writing of this official history of the Swedish wars with Poland and Denmark from 1655 to 1660 was entrusted by king Charles XI to Samuel Pufendorf, a German historian and expert on international law, who held the first chair of history at the new university of Lund (1668-1676) and was the official Historiographer of the Realm from 1676 until 1689. (Sten G. Lindberg: Swedish Books 1280-1967.)

Provenance: From the library of Ove Hassler (1904-87), Dean in Linköping, Sweden, and his son, Eivind Hassler (1939-2009).
