PLATES OF ROME. BARBAULT, JEAN.

Imperial folio (483x3760 mm). viii, 90 pp. 73 engraved plates (with 117 illustrations), and with 11 engraved vignettes in the text. Bound together with 51 extra engraved plates (all mounted on 26 leaves), of which one larger folding plate of St. Peter (some minor foxing).
Contemporary half calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and green label, red morocco imitation paper boards (partly rubbed and worn, joints worn, covers partly warped, flyleaf creased, some pencil notes on inside of cover). From the library of the Swedish artist Carl G. Fehrman, with his black library stamp on the title leaf.

Cicognara 3592. Brunet I, 646.
First edition of Jean Barbault´s (1705-66) large work on ancient monuments in Rome, which also contains three plates with wall paintings from Herculaneum, copied after "L´Antichita di Ercolano". This work, and his work on the modern monuments of Rome, are attempts to challenge Piranesi´s "La Vedute di Roma", published at the same time. At least 26 of the extra plates at the end, and perhaps also the map of Rome, are from Joachim von Sandrart´s "Des altern und neuen Roms Schau-Platz", Nürnberg 1685. The remaining plates are by various artists, for example Israel Silvestre, Adam Perelle and Piranesi.

Provenance: Carl G. Fehrman (1746-98), Swedish engraver and medal maker who arrived in Rome in 1775 and stayed there together with Swedish artists Sergel, Masreliez. He returned to Sweden in 1778.
