Small 8:o. (4), (1)-15, (4), 20-128 pp. Title printed in red and black.
Early 20th century full red morocco binding, lavishly gilt-tooled by Sir Edward Sullivan (signed E. S. Aurifex on inside of upper cover), gilt frame, within in corners floral decorations, romboid gilt centerpiece with inlay of green calf with title in gold, same decorations on lower cover, but the inlay with place and year of printing, gilt inner dentelles, richly gilt spine with floral ornaments, all edges gilt. Some foxing to inner doublures amd endpapers. Printed in 350 copies, this is one of 330 on papier vergé.

From the series "Le tresor des pieces rares ou inedites". This is a first edition of the works of a disciple to F. Villon, from a manuscript in the French national library.
Edward Sullivan (Aurifex, 1851-1937) considered himself a ´finisher´ and signed himself Aurifex, meaning worker in gold. He would order plain leather bindings and decorate them to his individual style. The rubbings of his bindings are now in the Huntington Library.
