James Cook (1728-1779), British navigator and famous explorer. His achievements in mapping the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography. Amongst others he discovered and charted New Zeeland and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and made his first voyage around the world in 1768-71 in the ship Endeavour. In the second voyage 1772-75 he looked for the southern continent in the ships Resolution and Adventure. In his third and last voyage in the years 1776-80 aboard the ships Resolution and Discovery, he was trying to find the North-West Passage, but instead found and explored Hawaii. The journey was completed without him as he was killed in Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, 1779.
