Description
FAMOUS MAP OF SCANDINAVIA. ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. Septentrionalium regionum descrip. No place no date. (Antwerpen 1570).
Hand-coloured engraved map with figurative cartouche including sphinx, monkey and a sea monster, ships and sea beasts in colours. About 360x490 mm. Latin text on verso with page number 45. With some repaired tears, finely mounted on japan paper, some minor browning.
Unrecorded state between state 1 and 2 according to Van den Broecke 160:2 (1570 L). Ginsberg 24, state 1. Narva is misspelled "Narna", and "Narna fl., but the "n" in Narna fl. looks like a "u" instead of "n", which appears in the 2 nd state. This is not recorded by Van den Broeke or Ginsberg. The dot over the second "i" in "Liuoniae" is missing, There is a dot after the title in the cartouche like in the 2nd state. Text on verso with 41 lines.
Edition without the 8 names in the Polar areas.
