Small 4to (245x205 mm). v, (1 blank, 1, 1 blank), 1-101, (9), 110- 408, (2) pp. 45 plates or maps including: 6 lithograph or engraved portraits, lithograph title to Appendix, 2 folding hand-coloured maps [of United States and state of New York], 3 maps, 33 folding engraved or lithograph plates. Also at the end 8 facsimiles of testimonial letters by John Adams, Jefferson, and marquis de Lafayette (portraits spotted, 1 with margin cut and reinforced, larger folding maps with small tears and creased, offsetting to text, some pages browned).
Contemporary half calf, marbled covers with label on upper cover "Presented by the city of New-York to A. B. Hays Esqr.", partly worn, gilt title in spine.

First edition. The construction of the Erie canal started in 1817 and was completed in 1825. It was one of the greatests feats of American engineering history. This is also one of the earliest books in America illustrated with lithographs.
