Contemporary brown half calf bindings, slightly worn and rubbed, gilt spines in compartments and red labels, speckled edges. Small repair to margin of half title, minor spotting. 4 volumes.
Pritzel 9259. First edition of this important scientific voyage and a detailed account of Japan. Thunberg (1743-1828) travelled to Japan, Ceylon and South Africa and was called the "Japanese Linnaeus" as well as "The father of Cape Botany". The work was also published in German, English and French.
