With 3 engraved frontispieces, 21 engraved plates (all, partly some foxing, some offsetting from plates to text).
Publisher's original red-brown fine-diaper cloth, worn, with central blindstamped partly faded arabesque design. Faded spines with title, part number and "Boz" lettered in gilt, some small damages at head. 3 volumes.
First edition, first issue.

"Boz" on all three titles, no plate-list, "Fire-place" plate by p. 313 in vol. III, Vol. I with the "t" in "encountered" indistinctly printed, the "the" on the same line successiveley, vol. III with "pilaster" on page 164. The plates are here bound in to face pp. 29 48 98 132 152 186 248 and 302 in volume one, pp. 60 130 151 196 260 and 296 in volume two, and pp. 20 30 105 164 216 296 and 313 in volume three.
Unusually for Dickens' novels, Oliver Twist was first issued complete in book form, rather than monthly serial parts. It did appear in "Bentley's Miscellany" magazine but was not completed until April 1839.
