Later (early 20th century) red half morocco, marbled boards, richly gilt spine in six compartments, green spine labels, red upper edge. Title and dedication leaf in vol. I dampstained in upper outer corner, also pp. 817-823. Some other light dampstaining and minor foxing. Old annotation dated 1761 on titles. 2 volumes.

Tenth, i.e. fourth, original edition of the Systema. Dedication leaf to count Tessin. "In this edition, the binomial system previously employed by Linnaeus in the work entitled 'Museum Tessinianum' (1753) was extended in its application to all the kingdoms of nature" (Soulsby). This edition has been accepted as the basis of zoological nomenclature.
This is Linnaeus's final version of the system by which many plants and animals are still named to this day whith reference 'Linnaeus', 'Linn' or 'L' attached. (Printing and the Mind of Man).
Provenance: Karl Joar Westman (1939-2022), Swedish lawyer and banker, also an entrepreneur in India and Sri Lanka. He was a devoted collector of antiques, paintings, sculpture, arts and crafts and not least of books. He was the son of the minister and professor K. G. Westman and his wife Margit, née Printz.
