PROVENANCE:
Hans Fromholtz (1924-11-18 — 2009-11-12), businessman and jazz musician, was a central figure in Swedish jazz music during the middle of the 20th century. His musical journey began early and was marked by a passion for jazz and a strong involvement in the musical life.
Hans grew up in Linköping. As a student, he received an alto saxophone as a student present, and in 1942 he began playing in the school orchestra “Real Band” as a chapel master. His ambitions brought him to the United States. After graduation, he took a job as a discounter on a boat to come to the United States to learn more about jazz and take part of the American jazz scene. Once back in Sweden, full of inspiration, Hans's jazz career took off and he became part of Åke Wieber's orchestra.
In 1946 Hans founded the music store “Hoffsten och Fromholtz” together with Gunnar Hoffsten, which became the start of a long and successful collaboration. Hans was also part of the formation of Hoffsten's orchestra in 1946, where Hans's saxophone playing became a major asset. The orchestra became a prominent ensemble on Sweden's jazz scene. They won the 1947 Orkesterjournalens competition at Nalen in Stockholm and were named Sweden's best orchestra.
In the 80s, SVT offered Hans and Hoffsten's orchestra to come back and play as a house band in Café Norrköping. The reunion became a fact. His and the orchestra therefore decided to record 12 melodies from the years of success on one disc.
