Denis Mitchell was born in Middlesex in 1912. Already as a young man he developed an interest in art, and when he moved to Cornwall as an 18-year-old he discovered the artistic community in St. Ives. The commitment to the area's artists made him start painting in earnest. When World War II started, plans for an artistic career were temporarily shattered, and he got a job at the Geevor tin mine in Cornwall. The experience of carving in stone fueled his interest in sculpture, and at the end of the war he was offered a position as a studio assistant to the artist Barbara Hepworth. This led to a ten-year collaboration in which he himself supervised the creation of many of Hepworth's sculptures. In 1959 he went under his own auspices, and in the 1960s became known for his polished bronzes. With exhibitions in London and New York, he quickly gained international recognition.
Mitchell's abstract sculptures have been exhibited extensively over the years, both in the artist's home country and abroad. Today, his work are included in several public art collections, such as the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of New South Wales in Australia and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California.
