Bruno Mathsson – Furniture Designer & Architect
He is one of Sweden’s greatest designers. His name is known worldwide, and at home there is scarcely anyone who hasn’t sat in one of his creations.
Bruno Mathsson quite literally grew up in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop (located at the same address as the family home). In his early twenties, Bruno was commissioned by Värnamo Hospital to design a chair for patients. The result, Gräshoppan (The Grasshopper), was something of a flop, and the examples were soon relegated to the hospital attic. But after that, the classics followed one after another. Eva, Annika, Pernilla, Maria Flap, Jetson and Karin are today all regarded as icons of Swedish furniture design.
At Stockholms Auktionsverk Sickla, we are given a fine introduction to the master’s work. Several of the above-mentioned icons are presented here, along with a bookcase that is as quintessentially Mathsson as anything could ever be.
