Iconic works by Klein and Warhol at The Modern Art & Design Sale

The leading lights of 20th-century art come together in one of Stockholms Auktionsverk’s most carefully curated auctions ever.

Yves Klein’s golden ‘Âge d’or [Golden Age], (MG 36)’ (1959) stands out as one of the auction’s most obvious highlights. The thin layers of gold, whose surface shifts with light and movement, reflect Klein’s vision of embodying the immaterial and the eternal – a work in which the symbolism of gold becomes a link between the earthly and the spiritual. The estimated price is set at 13–15 million SEK – the highest for any item at a Swedish auction so far this year.

“In his monochrome paintings, Klein sought to create an experience rather than an image – a no-figurative surface which vibrates with energy and spirituality. ‘Âge d’or [Golden Age], (MG 36)’ is a brilliant example of this: a meditation in gold, where light, reflection, and surface become the motif itself,” says Victoria Svedberg, specialist and head of the Modern Art Department.

Andy Warhol is another prominently featured icon in the auction’s art section. In ‘Monkey (Toy Painting1983), the playfulness of childhood merges with the aesthetics of consumerism in a colorful tribute to imagination. Meanwhile, in the newly discovered version of the painting ‘Frölunda Hockey Player’ (1986) – with its rare Swedish connection – Warhol allows a West Swedish hockey player to enter the same iconic universe as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Estimated price: 4–6 million SEK.

Together, these works reflect the diversity of modern art – from Klein’s serene spirituality to Warhol’s pulsating pop culture.
